Pacquiao Ends RP Training and heads up to LA

Watch Pacquiao vs Margarito Fight - Manny Pacquiao “played a bit too much” in logging 10 rounds of sparring Saturday afternoon, chief trainer Freddie Roach said after presiding over the Filipino fighter’s final workout in the country, a little over three weeks before the Nov. 13 collision with Antonio Margarito in Dallas.

Team Pacquiao was scheduled to leave for Los Angeles Saturday night and Roach is looking forward to the start of training at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood this Monday.

“I am closing the (Wild Card) gym from 12 noon to 5 p.m.,” said Roach, obviously pissed that there were simply too many people inside the Elorde Gym during the sparring with Amir Khan and Michael Medina.

Pacquiao did three rounds with Medina, had four with Khan and had another three with Medina before doing the other gym staples.

Roach said he expects the atmosphere at the Wild Card to be a lot serious than the ones he had seen in Manila and even in Baguio where he spent four weeks with the 31-year-old Pacquiao.

Pacquiao had his moments during the intense session with the world super-lightweight champion Khan, who gave a good account of himself against the world’s No. 1 boxer.

“Manny just loves to play,” said Roach, who did not sound very alarmed that Pacquiao has been taking it nice and easy.

“By fight time, we will be there,” said Roach.

Khan and Medina also defended Pacquiao’s antics, saying it’s hard and even not right to judge a mere sparring session.

“You don’t give your 100 percent in sparring,” said Khan. “Manny has speed and power and he will beat Margarito by late-round stoppage or 12-round decision.”

Khan theorized that “Manny could have taken it easy with me today.”

Medina echoed the same sentiments, saying Pacquiao remains topnotch.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao said he would be happy to face Floyd Mayweather before Filipino fight fans in what is likely to become a sequel to the epic 1975 Thrilla in Manila but clarified that staging such an ambitious promotion would depend on whether the country has what it takes to match Las Vegas' outlandish ways.

“Ang tanong ay kung kaya ba ng bulsa natin,” said Pacquiao when asked about fighting again on local soil. "Talagang gusto ko ulit na lumaban sa harap ng ating mga kababayan pero talagang malaki ang budget na kailangan para dyan."

Pacquiao vs Margarito : Bob Arum warned Pacquiao

Bob Arum, Top Rank Big Boss warned Manny Pacquiao not to underestimate Margarito’s determination to win this fight. Arum himself gave this warning to Pacquiao at his training camp here in the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City.

Bob Arum arrived yesterday in Manila and went directly to Baguio to witness the preparation being made by the Pacman for his November 13 WBC junior middleweight fight at Cowboy’s Stadium in Dallas, Texas against the Tijuana Tornado. On Monday, October 18 will be media day where Pacman will show the people that he is serious in his training and let them know in what level he is now as far as preparation is concerned.

According to Arum, Margarito poses very unique danger and that the Tijuana Tornado is in tremendous shape with a little over a month left. Margarito already stated that he will defeat Manny and resurrect his damaged reputation as a boxer when he figured in a hand wrap controversy in his fight against Shane Mosley on January 24, 2009 where he was meted one year suspension from the sport.

Arum further warned Pacman that this what makes Margarito too dangerous because he has a mission and anyone who has it will do everything to accomplish his task even if he needs to punish himself with rigorous training. He would be dangerous for any welterweight in the world. And while Margarito is fully concentrated in his training, meanwhile, Pacquiao’s preparation was clouded with controversies because of some activities not needed in his training, which include going down to Manila every weekend, playing basketball and other activities he attended in his capacity as Congressman of lone district of Saranggani Province which put doubt in the minds of many if Pacman will be able to win this fight.

Manny and Margarito will be fighting for the vacant WBC junior middleweight belt and Arum is still confident that the 7-time world division champion will take home the belt. Arum was also optimistic that more than 51,000 boxing fans will watch the fight which, for the second time, will be staged at Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium in Texas. His first fight against Joshua Clottey had a record of 50,000 watchers. “Because of Margarito, we’re reaching out more to the Hispanic community than we did last time because we didn’t have Hispanic in the main event. We’re very, very bullish about the buzz that’s taking place over in Texas. We know we’re going to do more than 51,000 we did before. How much more? We’ll see”, according to Arum

Tapia sees Pacquiao stopping Margarito in round 5

Glen Tapia (7-0, 5 KO’s), one of Manny Pacquiao’s many sparring partners, think he’s going to stop Antonio Margarito in the 5th round of their bout next month on November 13th. In an article at Philstar.com, the 20-year-old Tapia practically gushes about Pacquiao’s power and ability, saying “For me I think it’s like the fifth. Manny’s not going let him (Margarito) start. He’s going to pop him, pop him, pop him, and it’s going to be done by the time he gets started. It’s going to be a Mosley-Margarito just times 20.”

Oh brother. I think Tapia is getting a little carried away with himself here. I think Pacquiao is going to win too, but I certainly don’t think it’s going to be as easy as the way Tapia makes it sound. The way he describes it, Pacquiao is going to slice through Margarito like he’s another Ricky Hatton. Margarito isn’t another Hatton.

Other than his loss to Shane Mosley where Margarito looked like he hadn’t trained hard for that fight, he’s always very tough and usually beats up his opponents. I suspect Pacquiao will stop him but not before taking a lot of punishment along the way.

I see Pacquiao getting hit much more than he did in the Joshua Clottey fight. Tapia is pretty young and I don’t blame him for siding with Pacquiao, but he steps away and get some perspective before making a prediction like that. It would help if Tapia had at least sparred with Margarito so he would have a good frame of reference.

Tapia says this about Margarito: “He hits hard and he’s a very dirty fighter. He’s a very aggressive fighter. But he’s too slow for Manny. He takes time and he takes too long to start.”

Margarito is also a lot bigger than Pacquiao, and that’s something that Tapia failed to mention. Having a fighter that big with a much longer reach and with good power hammering Pacquiao all night long, he could take a lot of punishment before he eventually wins the fight. I think Tapia has no clue what he’s talking about when summing up this fight.

Khan to join Pacquiao in training camp in the Philippines

World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) is reportedly going to be flying over to the Philippines to train with Manny Pacquiao and their mutual trainer Freddie Roach so that Khan can help Pacquiao get ready for his November 13th fight against Antonio Margarito, while at the same time get ready himself for his December 11th bout against knockout artist Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In an article at Livefight.com, Khan says “As for fighting Pacquiao in the future, I can’t really see that happening. I’m sure by the time I get to that level he will be calling it a day. We train in the same camp and I’ve got too much respect for Manny to fight him.”

Pacquiao’s fighting style isn’t all that similar to Maidana, so it’s difficult to imagine what Khan will get from sparring with Pacquiao. And Khan doesn’t have a fighting style similar to Margarito, so Pacquiao won’t see the same kind of fighter in the ring with him on November 13th.

There’s a good chance that it won’t even be debatable whether Khan should face Pacquiao or not if Khan gets knocked out by Maidana like a lot of boxing fans think Khan will. It’s interesting to see how boxing fans are kicking around the idea of Khan fighting Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, when Khan is still totally unproven against top tier opposition. The best fighters that Khan has faced are older guys like Marco Antonio Barrera and Paulie Malignaggi, or ones without much power like Andriy Kotelnik.

Khan was knocked out by the only opponent that he’s been with any kind of power when Khan was knocked out in the 1st round two years ago by Breidis Prescott. Still, that’s not stopping Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions of considering putting Khan in with Mayweather if Khan can beat Maidana in December and then beat the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander bout in 2011.

Roach wants to keep Pacquiao from taking punishment from Margarito

Watch Pacquiao vs Margarito Fight - Trainer Freddie Roach is trying to keep Manny Pacquiao from running into so many head shots while training for Pacquiao’s November 13th bout against Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. It’s looking like Roach is going to try and have Pacquiao use a hit and run style to keep him from getting hammered so badly by Margarito. In an article at Gmanews.tv, Roach gave Pacquiao a lot of directions during his sparring session with Glen Tapia, saying “Don’t stay in front of him because he will hit you. Don’t take two punches in order to land three. Move, move away.”

From the sounds of it, Pacquiao was getting tagged by Tapia, who was said to have done well against Pacquiao. That’s not a good sign. If a 20-year-old, 7-0 fighter like Tapia can find Pacquiao with punches, then Margarito will have no problems whatsoever. It looks like Roach has his hands full trying to keep Pacquiao from following his brawling instincts and wanting to slug it out. If that happens against Margarito, Pacquiao is going to get torn apart limb by limb.

Pacquiao’s last opponent Joshua Clottey really did a number on Pacquiao’s face with only landing 10 measly punches per round. Can you imagine what Margarito is going to do to Pacquiao by landing seven to eight times many? Roach wants Pacquiao to hit and run, but Pacquiao won’t be able to follow those instructions. He’s only good at fighting like that in the first minute or two of the 1st round. After that, he reverts back into his slugging nature and just goes toe-to-toe while Roach squawks in the corner telling him to move. Those mutterings from Roach are completely lost on Pacquiao, because he only one way of fighting and that’s 100% attack.

Pacquiao’s high punch output attacks work on fighters like Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Clottey and Oscar De La Hoya, all of whom had come off recent defeats. But against a warrior like Margarito, who loves to slug it out, it’s going to be like bringing slop to a hog. He’s going to love and batter Pacquiao. If Pacquiao was able to switch gears and follow a plan B after things get bad for him in the first couple of rounds, I think he might have a chance to beat Margarito. But he won’t be able to do that. Pacquiao continue to fight as he always does and will come right at Margarito trying to beat him at his own game by throwing a lot of punches and getting his teeth knocked out in return.

Margarito can’t be out-worked. That’s not possible. You can clinch him to death like Shane Mosley did, but you can’t outwork him. Pacquiao is going to try and he’s going to get kicked around the ring like a little soccer ball from November 13th.
